あそばせる【遊ばせる】

1 〔遊びをさせる〕 let 《a boy》 play [do as 《he》 pleases].

●できるだけ子供は外で自由に遊ばせたい. I want the children [child] to play freely outside as much as possible.

・母親は子供を遊ばせながら編み物をしていた. The mother knitted while her child(ren) played.

・危険なおもちゃで子供を遊ばせてはいけない. Do not let children play with dangerous toys.

・〔消防署などからのお願いなどで〕 子供をマッチやライターなどで遊ばせないでください. Please do not allow children to play with matches or lighters.

・たまには牛馬も青空の下で遊ばせてやらんとな. Sometimes cows and horses have to graze and romp out under a blue sky.

・あの店は客を安い料金で遊ばせてくれる. It is possible to stay there very cheaply. | The charges [fees] there are very low.

2 〔自分の目･耳･心などを楽しませる〕

●プラネタリウムでは果てない時間と空間の世界に心を遊ばせることができる. At a planetarium your soul can roam in a world in which time and space have no limits.

・満山の紅葉にしばし目を遊ばせた. We feasted our eyes for a while on the autumn leaves covering the mountains.

・彼は世人の賞賛の言葉に耳を遊ばせる暇も惜しんで次の作品の制作に取りかかった. Not wanting to waste time listening to praise from the general public, he set about producing his next work.

3 〔働かせないでおく〕 have [leave] sb [sth] idle.

●集めた金を遊ばせておくのはもったいないから, とりあえず利率の高い定期預金にしておこう. The money that has been raised should not just lie idle; for the time being let's put it into a high-interest-paying term deposit.

・おじは桑畑をやめたあと(耕さずに)土地を遊ばせている. Since he stopped raising mulberries, my uncle has been letting the land lie fallow.

・駅前の一等地を遊ばせておくのはもったいない. It's a waste to let that prime piece of property [land] in front of the station lie vacant.

・材料の入荷が遅れると, それまで機械を遊ばせておくことになる. When materials come in late, it means we have our machines standing idle till they come in.

・あの人は少しも体を遊ばせておかない. That man never gives himself a rest.

・給料を払って無能な社員を遊ばせておくゆとりは当社にはない. This company cannot afford to pay wages to inefficient employees and let them sit around not doing any work.
